The legal defence to buy realistic imitation firearms — and the two systems used to prove it: UKARA and Airsoft Defence.

RIF vs. two-tone (IF)

Realistic Imitation Firearm (RIF)

Looks like a real firearm (realistic colours — black, tan, camo). You need a valid defence, verified through UKARA or Airsoft Defence, to buy one.

Imitation Firearm (IF) / Two-tone

Painted a bright colour (typically over 51% of the surface) so it clearly isn’t a real gun. Anyone 18+ can buy a two-tone without a defence — the usual starting point for newcomers.

Once you hold a valid, verified defence you may buy full RIFs, and you’re permitted to repaint a two-tone you already own back to a realistic finish.

UKARA — the established database

UKARA (the United Kingdom Airsoft Retailers Association) is a consortium of UK retailers who maintain a shared database of registered skirmishers. It was formed in response to the VCRA 2006 and, for many years, has been the industry-standard way to prove a defence.

How to get UKARA registered

1Be eligible18 or over, resident in the UK, and able to provide ID (passport, driving licence, or bank statement) plus proof of address.
2Play three skirmishes over 56+ daysTake part in at least three games at the same UKARA-registered site, with your third game falling 56 days or more after your first.
3Apply through the siteOnce you qualify, ask the site to register you. Show photo ID and proof of address; some sites charge a small admin fee and ask for passport-style photos.
4Receive your UKARA numberYou’re issued a membership number (and usually a card). Quote it when buying RIFs — retailers check it against the database.

Airsoft Defence — the digital platform

Airsoft Defence (airsoft-defence.co.uk, operated by Airsoft Defence Ltd) is a newer, nationwide digital system for player verification, retailer protection, and site compliance. It positions itself as a modern, paperless alternative for evidencing the same VCRA 2006 defence.

Which do you need? Acceptance depends on the retailer — some recognise UKARA, some recognise Airsoft Defence, and many accept other valid evidence of a defence too. Check what your chosen retailer and local site accept before you start building history with either system.

Frequently asked questions

Is either UKARA or Airsoft Defence a government licence?

No. Both are private systems that help you prove a legal defence under the VCRA 2006. Neither is a government-issued licence, and neither is strictly required by law — but retailers need evidence of a defence before selling a RIF.

Do I legally have to be registered to own a RIF?

No. The VCRA regulates the sale, import, and manufacture of RIFs, not ownership. However, you need a defence to buy one from a UK retailer, and these systems are the common ways to prove it.

Can I use both systems?

Yes. They’re independent, so you can build attendance history and hold status with either or both. What matters is that your chosen retailer accepts the proof you present.

Can under-18s play airsoft?

Minors can play at many sites with parental consent, but you must be 18+ to register for a defence and to buy any airsoft gun, including two-tones.

What if I’m not registered yet?

You can still buy a two-tone (brightly coloured) imitation — the usual route while you build up qualifying games toward a defence.

Do I need to stay active after being verified?

Yes. Regular, genuine attendance and up-to-date details keep your profile reliable for future retailer and site checks under either system.
